5 Reasons why you should walk to work

The morning commute can be a hectic journey. The tube is essentially a metal can filled with angry people, buses are usually filled with school children pressing the stop button every 5 seconds and don't even get us started on the morning traffic.

Public transport can be a chore, for many of us it's a necessary step, but what about those who actually live within walking distance? Is it worth walking to work?

Today is walk to work day, where many people begin to make this possible. But is it worth the trouble? Here are some reasons why you should consider walking to work (or part of the way).

1) Reduce that carbon footprint

It's no surprise that services like public transport, cabs or even taking your car to work can add to your carbon footprint. Cars, trains and buses all release greenhouse gases, which can be harmful for the atmosphere and you'd be surprised how much one car can contribute greenhouses gases into the atmosphere! By swapping your tyres for trainers, you'll be doing your bit in helping the environment.

2) Happy days!

Be honest, how many times has your day been ruined by ill mannered commuters, delayed trains or irresponsible people on the road? It's amazing how small things like that can greatly affect our mood and even our whole day. Walking to work offers you one thing commuting doesn't, a peace of mind! A nice walk to work in the sunshine is a great way to start the day, all you have to watch out for is road sweepers.

3) Stress be gone

Stress seems to be a major part of working life, no matter how much we try to avoid it the pressure seems to find a way of sneaking back in. According to the University of East Anglia, walking or cycling to work is "better for people's mental health" than driving. By avoiding crowds and other stress inducing commuter situations, you'll have a positive impact on your mental health.

4) Exercise galore

When you're working a standard 9-5 (or even longer) it can be difficult to squeeze some gym time, but making an effort to walk to work more could be the way you get your exercising fix for the day. Many of us are looking to try and get healthier, whether it's a new years resolution you're keeping or you just want to get a bit fitter for summer, a light morning walk is a great step to take.

5) Natural energy boost

Whether you're travelling to work through public transport or you're driving, you will inevitably start the day sitting down. This wouldn't be so much of a problem, but most of us will spend most of our day sitting down too. Being in this position just invites lethargy, which is probably why most of us don't really feel that awake by the time we reach our desk. Walking to work kicks us into gear and provides a natural energy boost.
